Ink!

Once again, we had a great time this week with the group out at Zanzabar. Bunch of new faces and lots of drawing going on. It is cool seeing some of the Horror anthology projects coming to life. As Ted mentioned last night, this book is going to be great. I'm pretty excited about it, personally. I've never really been "in" to horror per se, but I do love creatures and monsters. I have to admit I'm having a lot of fun working on my story. Here's a work-in-progress of one of the pages I'm doing. I'm in the process of inking it, and it's really going slower than I hoped. I'm gaining a new appreciation for master inkers like Tim Townsend, Richard Friend and Scott Williams... I just don't see how they do it!

Creature Inks

This week, I decided to focus on a single creature drawing I've been messing around with. Originally, this was one of my ideas for the monster at the end of the short story I'm doing for the LCS Horror Anthology... hopefully I can get it done in time! Well, turns out the creature I'm going with is a little simpler, but hopefully just as creepy... this one is just for fun.

For this image, I tried a new technique: I penciled just half the face then photocopied and flipped it over for perfect symmetry. I then ran a copy of the 2 halves together, slightly lighter so I could practice my inks over it. As I go along, I'm adding some randomness so it doesn't appear too symmetrical. Inking has always been a challenging area for me, so has been good practice, plus inking over a photocopy allows me to try different techniques without ruining the original pencil drawing.

Another night at Zanzabar

A few more sketches from our Booze-N-Doodle at Zanzabar this past week. I had trouble finding my rhythm this week. I've started penciling a story for the LCS Horror anthology, so I think my thoughts were focused on that... so it made it a little tough to loosen up and just draw. So in this batch, I have a conan-esque warrior, a couple of weird creatures, plus a quick space girl, inspired by the art book Tobin brought in (can't remember the artist's name). Also, I really enjoyed checking out Damon's sketchbook of creatures — amazing work!
